Newpin (New Parent Infant Network) is a community based program with a preventative, early intervention focus targeted to assist families experiencing significant difficulty or distress. The Newpin program offers peer support, quality early education and personal development that is structured and therapeutic. How did Newpin get started? The Newpin model was developed in the United Kingdom in response to the needs of new parents experiencing issues such as isolation, mental illness, family violence, social disadvantage, low self esteem and those who were at risk of physically or emotionally abusing their children. Newpin has been adapted by Uniting Care Burnside to suit an Australian context while still keeping the essential elements of the model to ensure positive outcomes for families. Newpin has expanded from its beginnings in Bidwill New South Wales and now operates in 9 locations across NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and now the Australian Capital Territory. Newpin will be operating two days per week at Uniting Care Kippax premises and is the first Newpin program in the ACT. What is the aim of Newpin? Newpin offers parents and children a unique opportunity to achieve positive changes in their live and relationships, based on four core values of support, equality, empathy and respect with self determination underpinning each of these. The Newpin program works gently with members (parents) to build on awareness of their own intrinsic value as a person, as a parent and a fulfilled member of the community. All interactions and practices at the centres are strengths-based. Members (parents) are actively involved in program development and are recognized as valuable contributors in helping their peers explore solutions to life’s challenges. Is Newpin for you?
