Emergency Relief

Often due to unforeseen circumstances, people enter into a period of their life when things just don’t go right for them. Being made redundant from their job, an accident or illness makes them unable to work and they suffer a loss of income. The current Global Financial crisis has affected many people in our region. Unemployment and being underemployed has caused many people to start to seek Emergency Relief assistance.

UnitingCare  Kippax was approached by the ACT Government late 2007  to operate a Emergency Relief Program (ERP) to provide assistance to the people who are facing immediate crisis.

People who come to UnitingCare  Kippax are met by qualified and experienced counsellors, who assist with the provision of assistance including;
•    frozen meals for the homeless, we also offer homeless clients showers and shaving gear, towels,soap,toothpaste ect.
•    non-perishable food in a hamper to last 3-4 days.
Gift Cards( vouchers) for the provision of fresh food & vegetables.
•     support with medical and pharmaceutical bills and bus tickets.
•    provide advocacy (e.g. housing, legal aid) and counseling.
•    budget counseling.
•    Community development and social networking and inclusion by providing referrals to other service providers.
•    Winter in Canberra can be very cold, and for those experiencing difficulty  are offered winter clothing, bedding and shoes.

The Emergency Relief Program is offered to all who live in Canberra and surrounding areas.
